A difficult Slavic language

Slovak is a Western Slavonic language spoken by about 5 million people in Slovakia, as well as in Canada, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Ukraine and the USA. It is closely related to Czech, Polish, and Sorbian.

Ludovít Štur (1815-1856) has permited through his works the development of the Slovak language.

Languages spoken by Slovaks

Slovaks can understand Czech and Polish, and to some extent also German and Hungarian, especially close to the borders with the corresponding countries. The Slovaks aged 40 and over can understand Russian, but the language is not widespread.
